Another North-Walian obscurity for #StandingStoneSunday - Cwm Eigiau (possible) chambered tomb.

Speculatively identified as the remains of a Neolithic chambered tomb, nestled in Cwm Eigiau beneath the high ridges of Y Carneddau mountains.

Visited May 2012 on descent from Carnedd Llewelyn and Pen yr Helgi-Du.

A North Walian obscurity for today's #StandingStoneSunday

Clogwyn-yr-Eryr (possible) stone row, high on a ridge in the foothills of Y Carneddau mountains. There are views to Hafodygorswen cairn circle in the valley, Pen-y-Gaer Iron Age hillfort and numerous high level Bronze Age cairns on the mountains. The tallest stone has drill holes and has been reused as a gate post at some time.

Passed on my way up to Carnedd Llewelyn, May 2012.

The alarmingly leaning Ffon y Cawr standing stone for today's #StandingStoneSunday

A beautiful slender stone, similar to Carfury in West Penwith, but leans over at a serious angle.

According to folkore, a giant threw the stone from a nearby hillfort in an attempt to wake up his sheepdog, who was sleeping in Maen-y-Bardd burial chamber nearby.

This visit July 2011.

Another Tal y Fan standing stone for today's #StandingStoneSunday - Maen Penddu, situated over 400m above sea level, high above the Conwy valley. There's a stone circle of very small stones (Cefn Maen Amor) nearby.

Visited July 2011.

The excellent Hafodty standing stone fo today's #StandingStoneSunday

A really fine monolith, it looks out over the Conwy valley and is yet another of the multiplicity of sites encircling Tal y Fan mountain on the edge of the Carneddau.

A rather ruined stone circle is a lovely location for today's #StandingStoneSunday

Hafodty circle, on the slopes of Tal y Fan above the Conwy valley. Only three stones still stand, with another three fallen. However, it forms another part of the incredible complex of sites encircling Tal y Fan. It's also a favourite of sheep who like to use the stones for a good scratch.

This visit in changeable weather, July 2011.

Big Rain sweeping across North Wales today, so here's a sunnier day for #StandingStoneSunday

The wonderful Maen-y-Bardd (The Poet's Stone) dolmen, set high on a Carneddau hillside overlooking the beautiful Conwy valley.

"...did the song come first, or the stone? Was a bard buried here, or did the place make poets of its visitors?"

This first visit July 2011. Blog here:

The fine Cae Coch standing stone above the beautiful Conwy valley for today's #StandingStoneSunday.

The stone is a thin slab, but broad and tapering on the side that faces the valley. It's one of several stones on this part of the Tal y Fan slopes, likely marking the route to the wondrous Maen y Bardd chambered tomb. Here the view is to Pen y Gaer hillfort on the centre skyline, with the rocky ridge of Pen y Castell on the right.

This visit July 2011.
