Quella tra Carlos Alcaraz e Joao Fonseca è senza dubbio la sfida più interessante del secondo turno del Masters 1000 di Miami. Il numero uno al mondo contro chi aspira ad arrivare ai vertici: i due si affronteranno nella notte tra venerdì e sabato, non prima di mezzanotte. Uno scontro che lo stesso Joao Fonseca ha reso ancora più incandescente già alla vigilia. Il motivo? Una maglia del Brasile indossata da Carlos Alcaraz durante la conferenza stampa pre partita a Miami.
Un gesto che non è passato inosservato, tanto che lo stesso Joao Fonseca ha raccontato i retroscena nel backstage: “Prima della partita ho visto Carlos nello spogliatoio e mi ha detto: ‘Guarda, oggi vado col Brasile’. E io gli ho risposto: ‘Ti stai preparando così il pubblico non ti va contro domani’”, ha spiegato il giovane brasiliano sorridendo e scherzando, ma non troppo.
Dietro il clima scherzoso e l’ironia c’è infatti un fondo di verità: il fatto che il pubblico di Miami sia per larga parte composto da latinoamericani può fare tutta la differenza del mondo e Alcaraz lo sa. Ma lo sa anche Fonseca, che in conferenza stampa è poi tornato sulla questione: “Spero che il pubblico stia dalla mia parte”, ha concluso il giovanissimo tennista 20enne.
Per Fonseca è un 2026 fin qui “sfortunato” per quanto riguarda i sorteggi: dopo aver affrontato Jannik Sinner agli ottavi di finale di Indian Wells, infatti adesso affronterà Carlos Alcaraz già al secondo turno del secondo Masters 1000 sul cemento americano. Servirà un’altra prova perfetta da parte del brasiliano. E anche quella potrebbe non bastare: contro Sinner aveva già fatto vedere buone cose, ma perdendo in due set (due tie-break).

The world number one against those aspiring to reach the top: the two will face off in the night between Friday and Saturday, not before midnight. A confrontation that Joao Fonseca himself made even more heated already on the eve. The reason? A Brazilian shirt worn by Carlos Alcaraz during the pre-match press conference in Miami.
An act that went unnoticed, so much so that Joao Fonseca himself recounted the behind-the-scenes events backstage: “Before the match I saw Carlos in the locker room and he said to me, ‘Look, today I’m going with Brazil’. And I replied to him, ‘Are you preparing the audience to go against you tomorrow’,” explained the young Brazilian, smiling and joking, but not too much.
Behind the joking atmosphere and irony there is actually a grain of truth: the fact that the Miami audience is largely made up of Latin Americans can make all the difference in the world, and Alcaraz knows it. But so does Fonseca, who then returned to the matter at a press conference: “I hope the audience is on my side,” concluded the young 20-year-old tennis player.
For Fonseca, it’s a 2026 that has been “unfortunate” so far regarding the draws: after having faced Jannik Sinner in the eighth final of Indian Wells, he now faces Carlos Alcaraz already in the second round of the second Masters 1000 on American hard court. A perfect performance will be needed from the Brazilian. And even that may not be enough: against Sinner he had already shown good things, but losing in two sets (two tie-breaks).
