The more I think about the #Optus flop yesterday… the more I think going #cashless is a fool's game.

You're at the whim of the telecommunications infrastructure. I've seen the coffee vendor at Stirling's Crossing do the MasterCard Jig in the paddock trying to get an errant payment terminal to work more times than I care to count.

Telstra had a major outage a few years back.
Optus had their outage yesterday.
Vodafone have had it so many times they get called "Vodafail".
All other providers in AU use one of these three. (Boost, Belong use Telstra; Internode used to be Optus, now Vodafone; Amaysim use Optus…)

Our telcos have had a cavalier attitude to network resilience for years, as have the banks with their payment systems. Until this changes, sorry, I stay #cardless.
