Surreal.

First #CapeTownMarathon done. I hated and loved it. Missed my goal time by 11mins. Completed at 4:41:41.

All things considered, happy this one.

Thanks everyone for the messages and encouragement.

I almost missed #medalmonday🏅.

PS: this means I qualified for… wait, this post isn’t about that.

A quick check in with marathoners who’ve been tapering and are running this weekend

It’s #CapeTownMarathon week & I’m processing. It’s been a long training block—18 weeks. It was needed because I came from the couch to 4 weeks of training to a half marathon.

I needed to build a base & work toward the marathon. I’ve loved and hated the journey. I’ve learned a lot about myself, health and got to appreciate community anew.

I will write more about running post-marathon.

This past week I did all runs as planned. The easy and recovery runs—all of them. I did an 8K tempo run which was a tempo effort I was was happy with. Haven’t been able to do one that long in a while.

I thought it was the most challenging run I would do this week, until the long run. Well that one is for another post.

The challenge for the tempo was going by feel. It was also about the self talk and the mind.

Another week closer to #CapeTownMarathon

Here I am learning to celebrate the easy TRAINING runs because they ARE important training runs. Sometimes the temptation to ignore the plan and sabotage the process is very strong.

This is an important PSA #NoteToSelf: don’t sabotage yourself mid-process. Remember every run has a purpose and not honouring that can produce unwanted outcomes.

Run the big effort runs big and easy ones easy, paying attention to their purpose and accomplishing them in each run.

At 10 degrees Celsius—optimum temp for a run. My watch shouted at me less about being out of Zone 2. I kept this easy run eeeaaaassssyyyy.

Learning to respect the purpose of each run (thanks @coachbennett ) for that reminder.

Getting closer and more excited about #CapeTownMarathon as it gets closer each week.

Did Pilates and some time on the bike. Was great after the week’s training and good prep for the 20km long run.

Loving the cross training. #CapeTownMarathon loading.

After a ramp up of strength training this past week, this is what my training looks like today. You might need this tip more than you realise.

So grateful for #parkrun a community for runners at all different levels. Great way to start my weekends. I often use it as a recovery run. Was great today not chasing any PBs etc besides embracing the easy run.

16 weeks to #CapeTownMarathon and still loving the journey of getting there to start AND finish.

This is the best recovery run I’ve done done in a while. Best because I was able to keep it an easy run.

Getting closer to #CapeTownMarathon each week.
