How to Downgrade a Canon Camera’s Firmware to a Previous Version

If for any reason you need to downgrade your firmware update to an older one, there are two methods you can follow to revert to a previous version.

The latest firmware version is not always the best one, photographer and filmmaker KH Cams says in his YouTube video that describes the processes. He says that it is possible that a much-loved feature is no longer available in the latest version of your camera's firmware or a new, crippling bug was introduced in an update in which case you might want to roll back to the version you had before.

In one such case, Canon Rumors notes that some users have found autofocus issues with the Canon EOS R5 1.5.0 firmware update and reverting to a previous version would alleviate the newly-introduced bug faster than Canon can likely fix it with a new update.

The two proposed methods are theoretically compatible with any Canon camera that has dual card slots -- and only those with dual card slots -- and in his example, KH Cams uses a Canon EOS R6.

Warning: While KH Cams does show his methods working, he also notes that downgrading your firmware is not a fail-safe solution and theoretically could damage the camera. Any user who wants to try rolling back to an older firmware should do so at their own risk.

How To Revert a Canon Camera's Firmware, Method #1

The first option involves using two SD cards.

  • Step 1: Insert one memory card with the latest firmware version into the camera and open the settings menu.
  • Step 2: Locate the "Firmware" section and click it. As the camera displays the latest firmware version it has installed, press "OK" and instantly open the memory card slot to insert the second memory card with the older firmware version. Do not close the memory card door yet.
  • Step 3: The camera will now give an option to pick either of the two versions and you can select the older one. Once you select your pick, you can close the memory card door, and press "OK" to start the installation.

As a note, this method didn't work for KH Cams and stopped at 73% progress every time. That said, some who tried the method reported in the comments that it worked for them, so it appears inconsistent and may or may not work on a case-by-case basis.

How To Revert a Canon Camera's Firmware, Method #1

The other method uses one memory card at a time and requires quick reaction on your part.

  • Step 1: Insert a memory card with the latest camera version and locate "Firmware" in the menu.
  • Step 2: When you are ready, you have to press "OK" on the update and open the battery door at the exact same time. It won't work unless both are done simultaneously.
  • Step 3: Insert a card with the earlier firmware version, close the card door and then the battery door.
  • Step 4: Immediately after Step 3, the camera will turn on and show the option to install the older version, which you can select to start the process.

For KH Cams , this method worked successfully.

_Disclaimer: Brute forcing or "hacking" a camera's operating system is always a risk. It is very possible that either method described above can cause irreparable damage to your camera or void your warranty. Try at your own risk. _

The New Canon EOS R6 Firmware Is Incredibly Impressive

With the new Canon R6 firmware update, a great camera gets even better. The Canon R6 can now detect vehicles and helmeted faces.

Canon R6 and 1DX III Get C-Log 3, Simultaneous Dual-Card Recording

Canon has released a firmware update to both the EOS R6 and the 1DX Mark III that adds Canon Log 3 and also enables the ability to record videos to both memory cards at the same time.

Canon EOS 1DX Mark III

For the 1DX Mark III, firmware 1.5.0 adds Canon Log 3 which can now be selected from the Log settings. The company says that support for RAW videos shot with Canon Log 3 and RAW (Light) will be available in future versions of the Cinema Raw Development in the Digital Photo Professional software as well as support for the processing of RAW movies shot with Canon Log 3 with the application of Viewing LUT.

The update also adds the ability to simultaneously record videos on both memory cards, with the exception of RAW and RAW (Light) which cannot be recorded to both cards at the same time. Additionally, support for VPG 400 (Video Performance Guarantee Profile) -- a standard based on the CFexpress 2.0 specification -- has been added.

Finally, this update fixes an issue where, in rare instances, shooting settings for still photos are retained when switching to movie mode.

Canon EOS R6

Just like on the 1DX Mark III, firmware version 1.4.0 adds Canon Log 3 to the Canon Log settings and also enables simultaneous recording to both memory cards with no notes of limitations on the feature.

The update also addresses a few bugs. First, it fixes an issue in which, during HDMI connection, if the camera's screen turns off, a zebra pattern would display on the HDMI output. The firmware update also fixes an issue in which sufficient image stabilization effects may not be attained immediately after the start of shooting. On that same note of stabilization, Canon also has improved stability when specifically using two lenses: the RF400mm f/2.8 L IS USM and RF600mm f/4 L IS USM.

These updates are both free, and the EOS R6 and 1DX Mark III cameras can be updated after first downloading the firmware update from Canon's website. Firmware 1.5.0 for the 1DX Mark III can be found here and firmware version 1.4.0 for the EOS R6 can be found here.

Canon Adds Video-Focused Firmware Updates for 1DX Mark III, R5, R6

Canon has released a set of updates to the EOS 1DX Mark III, R5, and R6 that improves the experience of all three cameras, and give especially the R5 additional video features. The update includes the addition of Canon Log 3 on the R5, as well as a low bitrate recording option on all three cameras.

The updates were announced on Canon's Twitter. Photographer and YouTuber Gordan Laing has published the following video that covers the changes to the EOS R5:

The EOS R5 was the recipient of the most updates of the three cameras. Of note, Canon has granted the ability for the camera to shoot in C-Log 3 and also added RAW Light to video recording options to reduce the file size of 8K and 4K videos, which enables lower bitrate shooting. Canon also added the ability for the camera to capture up both 119.9 and 100 frames per second in Full HD 1080p recording. The company also added electronic full-time manual focus, which allows manual focus adjustment to always be possible with both One-shot AF and Servo AF.

Canon also states that support for shooting in Canon C-Log 3 in RAW video is coming to the camera in a future firmware update.

Other updates: The R5 now includes the ability to have the camera's monitor turned off at all times during shooting. The transfer time (estimated) during FTP transfers is now displayed, and you can now select protected images that failed to be transferred and protected images that have not yet been transferred and transfer them all at once. Canon also enabled the ability to save/load camera settings to a card.

Canon also addressed three bugs: The update fixes a phenomenon, in which the camera does not function normally when using certain CFexpress cards, fixed an issue where the camera cannot function normally when the drive mode is set to "High-speed continuous shooting" to shoot still images continuously and fixed a phenomenon in which the power may become suspended when the camera is powered via USB for an extended period of time.

You can download Canon R5 firmware update 1.3.0 here.

The EOS R6 is also receiving the low-bitrate recording option and electronic full-time manual focus, and FTP transfer status display. The company also promises that C-LOG 3 is coming to the R6 in a future firmware update. Canon also addressed two bugs: where the camera does not function normally when the drive mode is set to “High-speed continuous shooting” to shoot still images continuously, where it may corrupt the image displayed in the EVF, and where the camera may get suspended when connected to USB power for an extended period of time.

You can download the Canon R6 firmware update 1.4.0 here.

The 1DX Mark III is also getting the low-bitrate recording option, FTP file status display, and also sees improved connection reliability when using FTP and USB at the same time. Canon promises that C-Log 3, just like with the R6, will be coming at a later date.

You can download the 1DX Mark III firmware version 1.4.0 here.

Canon also announced two firmware updates for two lenses: the RF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS USM version 1.1.0 and the RF 100-500 f/4.5-7.1L IS USM version 1.0.9. Both lenses get support for electronic full-time manual focus and the update also improves an issue where the background is not blurred when performing a slow pan with IS set to Mode 2 or 3.
