For #ThickTrunkTuesday, I have a symbol of resilience for you: an #oak #tree that is still going strong despite a massive #canker. The tree may be from the late 1500s when the #park was founded as a hunting area and breeding/research compound, today it's next to the moose enclosure of #SababurgZoo.
The tree has a height of around 27 metres and a circumference of more than 6,6 metres (below the canker). The hollow #trunk houses a hornets' nest and visitors are asked to be cautious. As you can imagine, it's a popular photo spot.

@daemonicusprince That might be hypoxylon, a weak opportunistic fungus that develops on the wood of well-shaded trees. Their presence within the wood of the tree manifests in the form of cankers (areas of dead wood that slowly grow over time like a scab). These cankers vary in colour from a yellowish brown to grey to black.

If this is an oak, then it’s likely Hypoxylon atropunctatum. My guess at the regular pattern is the fact that fungal infections in a tree follow the tree’s circulatory system up and down the trunk, resulting in localized flareups along paths of least resistance.
