Grant Green, Green is Beautiful, 1970 on Blue Note

Green joined here by Blue Mitchell (trumpet), Claude Bartee (tenor sax), Emmanuel Riggens (organ), Jimmy Lewis (bass), and Idris Muhammad (drums) plus Richard Lendrum (bongos) and Candido Camero (congas). Recorded in 1970 by Rudy Van Gelder in Englewood Cliffs, NJ. My copy—via Salem Flea Marketplace—is the 2023 Blue Note Classic Vinyl Series reissue, mastered by Kevin Gray at Cohearent Audio and pressed at Optimal, which sounds (and looks) great.

Calypso Dance Party With Candido, Calypso & Girl by Candido, released on ABC Paramount in 1957.

Like many albums made by Latin players during the 50s, this is kind of a straight Latin effort in parts, dressed up in Calypso guise to try to get higher sales. Johnny Carisi directed the whole project – and it would have a nice Latin jazz sound, were it not for the occasional intrustion of guests like The Twintones and Claudia Swann, who must be the "girl" in the title! Candido still gets in some nice licks at the right moments, though – and the best tracks drop the calypso for most of the groove. Titles include "Talking Drums", "The Search", "Like My Heart", "Murder In The Market", and "Linstead Market". - Dusty Groove

In Indigo by Candido, released in 1958 on ABC Paramount.

Candido cut sooo many great Latin records over the years, spanning a wide range of styles, we have a hard time deciding which we love the best. We like to think this may be his best album from the early part of his career, specifically because it features the master conga player amidst a tight jazz lineup, who leave him plenty of room to solo and just plain get down doing his thing. Dick Hyman's on organ, Joe Puma's on guitar, and Ernie Royal's on trumpet, with George Duvivier and Charlie Persip in the rhythm section. 8 tracks in all, including "Afro Blue", "Caravan", "Softly But Blue", "Blue Lou", "Blue Prelude", "Bongo Baby", "Blue Dirge" and "Candido Cocktail". - Dusty Groove

The Volcanic by Candido, released on ABC Paramount in 1957.

Candido's firey conga is backed by a tight jazz group conducted by Ernie Wilkins. The players include Art Farmer, Jimmy Cleveland, Hank Jones, and Ernie Royal, and although they don't get to solo much, they play nice and hard, and give Candido great support in the background. Tracks include "Lady in Red", "Warm Blue Stream", "Tin Tin Deo", "Kinda Dukish", and "Takeela". - Dusty Groove

Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers, Drum Suite, 1957 on Columbia

Art Blakey is joined here (at least on the A-side) by Cuban drummers Candido and Sabu, with Ray Bryant, Oscar Pettiford, and Charles Wright. On the B side, Jackie McLean, Spanky DeBrest, Sam Dockery, and Bill Hardman join as the Jazz Messengers.

My copy—via private sale—is a 1950s Columbia Hollywood plant pressing with the 6-eye label. The artist is credited as “The Art Blakey Percussion Ensemble” on both labels but the cover credits the B side to the Jazz Messengers.

Candido by Candido Featuring Al Cohn, released on ABC Paramount in 1956

One of the jazziest Candido albums ever – a tight little 50s set that features the master congolero working with a small combo that includes Al Cohn on tenor, Dick Katz on piano, and Joe Puma on guitar! The sound is nice and stripped-down – bristling with a percussive approach to the grooves that really seems to inspire the soloists – especially Cohn, who's playing here with a tone that we didn't expect! The session jams along nicely throughout – and tracks include "Perdido", "Candi Bar", "Mambo Inn", "Candido's Camera", and "Indian Summer" - Dusty Groove
