I've had a long chat with one of my pals from my #canal #volunteering days.

He's firmly of the impression that within 5 years much of the canal system in England & Wales will be closed to navigation and many miles of towpath will no longer be maintained.

The Canal and River Trust is facing a financial crisis which is beyond the limits of charity fundraising, voluntary efforts and boating licence fee increases.
Cuts in the funding from government has made this inevitable.

There have been massive staffing cuts (not always the correct staff in my opinion) and a huge sell off of land & buildings but all it's done has been to put off the inevitable.

I personally think that there are partial solutions but unless there are huge continuing central government bungs - nothing can save the canal network as we know it.

I no longer have faith in the management of #CRT and feel that too many poor decisions were taken over a long period.

Except if you're desperately ill, old, broke, having a crisis, suffering from poor mental health etc, etc. Heck, even if you just want to cruise your boat in a normal way. It always seems to me that there is a long-standing cultural problem at Waterways management, a scarcely concealed hostility to boats and boaters that set in some time in the 1950s, and has never ended.
