I am an Interior Designer based out of Toronto, with east coast roots. I couldn’t find an Interior Design program in Nova Scotia at that time, so I knew I had to move to study. As a ‘mature’ student, I decided on a private college in Toronto offering a fast track option where you didn’t have to take summers off. I was more interested in getting the schooling out of the way, excited to start my career. I thought I would move back to Halifax after the 3 years, but I loved being in the big city so decided to stay. 2024 will mark my 20th year in Toronto! Roxann Interior Design is an interiors studio driven by form, function, aesthetic harmony and client adaptation. We find beauty in incorporating natural materials, purpose in visual economy, and authenticity in imperfection. I grew up near Busby, Alberta on a farm. We were a book-loving family; parents and children read a lot. Stories were important. Almost as soon as I learned how to use a pencil, I started to write stories. Mrs. Wood, my grade 3 and 4 teacher, kept a special notebook in her classroom for the best stories. And I remember the thrill I had when I got to copy my first story into her book. I knew I wanted to be a writer. I’m the author of four books: Teaching Places (a memoir about the land), The Glorious Mysteries and Other Stories (short fiction), The Death of Annie the Water Witcher by Lightning (a novel) and mostly recently a chapbook short story called The Bachelors and Widows Christmas Party. I’ve also published poetry and essays and am working on my first play. Parallel to my writing career, I have worked as a public policy advisor, project coordinator, editor, independent theologian, social worker, secretary, camp counsellor, and A&W carhop.

FYI #Canadian folks looking for options for data storage, hosting etc on this side of the border - Sync is a Google Drive / Dropbox alternative hosted in and Canadian owned. They have a basic free plan to try it out.

Granted you don't get the whole Google Docs office suite for your files, but for just storage, they're a good option.

I’m an accident of history, the result of highly improbable fusion of gametes. I had no input into either the timing (sometime in Era of the Anthropocene) or a place (Namibia) for this miracle to occur, but I am very happy with the result. A subsequent series of dubious choices and a few lucky breaks means I am now a writer and editor living in Edmonton, Canada. I was barely walking when an acquaintance of my mother’s declared: that boy has potlood-ore (pencil ears), that is to say, ears big and wide enough to act as a quill stand. That settled it: I knew then that I would one day work with words. The equipment was built into me. Language and how we can use it to impart meaning and intent, or wield power through it, remains endlessly fascinating. Every time I write or edit, I am aware that I am helping to shape how we see the world - what could be better than that?
