Happy National Mom and Pop Business Owners Day to all those who likely have to work today. Over 55% of businesses in Canada have less than 5 employees, and 73% have less than 10. A late 2025 #StatsCan survey reports business confidence is high despite tariff challenges, and 30% of companies report higher sales of Canadian products.

Maclean's made some business predictions for 2025 and pretty much got them wrong.

From the GM archives, one of my favourite posts. #HappyBirthday to Galen Clark (March 28, 1814 – March 24, 1910), the Canadian-born American conservationist and writer. He is known as the first European American to discover the Mariposa Grove of Giant Sequoia trees and helped secure legislation to protect it and the Yosemite area. For 24 years he served as Guardian of Yosemite National Park.

On March 27, 1613, the 1st non-indigenous child was born in Canada at Cuper's Cove, Newfoundland. Although the name of the child seems to be lost, the father was John Guy who established the Cuper's Cove colony in 1610 under a royal charter from James I. It was England's first attempt at organized colonization in Canada. The colony was ultimately unsuccessful but it served as a beacon for future colonists.

On March 26, 1885, the Battle of Duck Lake was the 1st armed engagement between North-West Mounted Police forces of the Government of Canada, and the Métis militia of Louis Riel's newly established Provisional Government of Saskatchewan. The 30-minute battle took place at the settlement of Duck Lake on the old Carlton Trail, between Métis headquarters at Batoche and NWMP headquarters at Fort Carlton.

Technically Black Canadians, recently emancipated, earned the right to vote in 1837. However the reality of #VotingRights was very different for them, for women, Indigenous people, and poor Canadians. The history of voting rights in Canada was messy, unfair, and full of examples where our government abused their power.
Remember, voting is a privilege achieved through significant struggle. Don't squander it.

The chaotic story of the right to vote in Canada | CMHR

The story of the right to vote in Canada is the story of a centuries‐long struggle to extend democratic rights to all citizens. It’s a chaotic tale that includes rebellions and riots, as well as protests, and visits to the Supreme Court of Canada. Without further ado, here is the story of voting rights in what is now Canada.

#HappyBirthday to Ernie Quigley, born OTD in 1880, and arguably the most prolific referee in sports history. In 40+ years of officiating, it's estimated he worked 5,400 baseball, 1,500 basketball, and 400 football games logging 100,000 miles yearly in travel. Asked how his wife liked him being away 325 nights a year, he quipped: “Mrs. Quigley likes it fine. We’re constantly getting reacquainted.”

We're now getting to the big ones... as we break into the top 10 in #CanadaRivers. The South Saskatchewan River is #10, beginning at the confluence of the Bow and Oldman Rivers in southern Alberta and ends at the Saskatchewan River Forks, the confluence of the South and North Saskatchewan Rivers which then becomes the Saskatchewan River. Flowing for 1,392 km it drains a watershed of 146,100 km2, 1,800 of which are in Montana, USA.
Major dams were constructed on the river to prevent flooding, for reservoirs, irrigation, and for hydroelectric power. The South Saskatchewan provides approximately 19% of the hydro-electricity generated by SaskPower. A 2009 WWF Canada report analysed the river flow on ten Canadian rivers & found the South Saskatchewan River was most at risk. Climate change, agricultural & urban infrastructure water use, and dams producing hydroelectricity, have all combined to reduce the flow of the river by 70%.

On this International Day of Happiness I think we should check on Canada’s world ranking on the #Happiness scale. It appears we're are not happy.
I've put some blame on #PeePee in the past for negatively impacting Canadian satisfaction surveys because he incessantly tells us we're broken. Yes, he is exploiting rel issues but maybe working on real solutions would be a better approach. The latest World Happiness Report 2026 has Canada falling 25th place, continuing a downward trend - 18th in 2025 and 13th in 2024. The report suggests that countries who use social media for 5+ hours a day, particularly young people, are less happy than those who are doomscrolling less. IMO our youth are not happy because their salaries can't keep pace with the cost of living, but an algorithm would constantly reinforce that if you're active on the platforms owned by U.S. tech bros.

Canada slips further down in World Happiness rankings, due in part to social media use | CBC News

Heavy social media use has contributed to a stark decline in well-being among young people, with the effects particularly worrying in teenage girls in English-speaking countries — including Canada — and Western Europe, according to the 2026 World Happiness Report published Thursday.
