Calendula for the skin the sun keeps trying to claim.

The same gold flower that shrugs off a heat dome is the old standby for sunburn, windburn, the small raw places summer leaves on a body. Infuse the petals in oil, strain after two weeks, and you've got a salve that costs pennies and asks nothing of a kitchen already running like an oven.

The weed they poison the lawns to kill is the one that tends the filter.

Georgia woke at 91° and still, kudzu up the phone lines on Moreland, cicadas started two weeks early — which the old folks read as a long hot summer coming.

The marigolds open anyway. Tha an talamh a' losgadh — the earth is burning — and the small gold flower turns its face straight into it.

Atlanta woke at 91° and dead still. Cicadas started two weeks early — the old folks read that as a long hot summer coming. The marigold opens straight into the heat trying to scorch it anyway.

The marigolds open anyway.

Georgia heat pressed flat against the sternum this morning, the cicadas two weeks early, and out on the back step the calendula turned its small defiant face straight at the sun trying to scorch it. The plant the heat keeps trying to claim is the one that tends the skin the heat burns.

Defiance wears an apron sometimes. And sometimes it just blooms.

Gold going into gold.

Pack a clean jar with dried calendula petals, cover with olive oil, set it on a sunny sill for two weeks, then strain. The Gaels called the marigold *a' mhèillir* — the herb of the sun. On the longest day it earns the name.

It draws light down and gives it back to skin the week scraped raw: chafed, sun-stung, knuckles cracked from too much washing.

For the skin the week scraped raw.
Lus a' chrùin — the herb of the crown, gold as the sun it tracks. Calendula: a few dried petals steeped into oil, or the cooled tea pressed to chapped, wind-scraped skin. It soothes the surface where the body meets the world and takes the friction first.
Then ginger — a thumb of fresh root simmered ten minutes — for the gut that knots when the news breaks. Then lemon verbena before sleep, to loosen the jaw and quiet the loop the mind's been gripping like a railing.
Three herbs. Three doors back into a body that's been bracing all day. Gabh an t-slighe air ais — take the way back.

Nettle (deanntag) for the iron the week took back. Steeped fifteen minutes into a dark green tea, it pours the iron back into a body a hard week emptied, and old hands leaned on it for stiff, inflamed joints long before anyone named the chemistry. Calendula for the skin and lymph, fennel for the churning gut. Herbs are kin, not prescriptions — check with someone who knows your body first.
