“Darken satellite images of the Iran war”: the decision by Planet Labs on the order of the White House

A veil falls over the top-down view of the war in Iran, possibly until the end of the conflict. Planet Labs, a company that manages a network of satellites that “observe” the Earth and sells images to governments and private individuals, has announced that the publication of photos of the territory of the Islamic Republic and the war zone will be suspended indefinitely. The company explains that the request came from the White House. The company explicitly stated that the measure is intended to prevent Iranians from using the images to attack the United States and its allies. The news was given by various international media outlets such as Reuters and Al Jazeera.

The U.S. company – founded in 2010 by former NASA scientists – made the matter public with an email sent yesterday, Saturday, to its clients. A 14-day delay had already been imposed on the publication of Planet Labs satellite images. Even earlier, a preliminary delay of 96 hours, four days, had been initiated on February 28 when the United States and Israel unleashed the conflict in Iran. Since that time, the war zone has expanded to other and various countries around the Persian Gulf.

From now on, Planet Labs will move to a “managed distribution of images” considered not dangerous for security and case by case, only for urgent needs and crucial importance for the mission or for public interest reasons. “These are extraordinary circumstances and we are doing everything possible to balance the needs of all our stakeholders,” the California-based company stated.

Military uses of satellite technology include target identification, weapon guidance, missile tracking, and communications. Some space experts say that Iran could access commercial images, including those obtained through the United States’ adversaries.
