The Great Big Butterfly Count starts tomorrow in UK - a critical moment in time as many british species struggle to adapt to climate warming. I'll be looking for Small Tortoiseshells - in decline here over last 10 years.

one of nine different butterfly species I sighted in my neighbourhood today - the highest number this year in a single day. This is a female Meadow Brown, ‘maniola’ genus, the only one spotted, sheltering in a hedge from a strong summer breeze.

How Meadow Brown butterflies are adapting to global heating - displaying fewer spots. They have been one of the species thriving around here, where much land is left grassy for the (in many other ways destructive) dairy industry.

Meadow brown butterflies ‘adapt’ to global heating by developing fewer spots

Study finds female chrysalises that develop at higher temperatures have fewer eyespots, making them harder to see in dry grass

I suspect this Small Tortoiseshell has been around the block quite a while. #today after days of wind and rain, it settled on a wall warmed by the sun, seeming not to have strength to take off while I moved in very close. The last survivor of Aglais urticae this season, I suspect

From my first digital camera. A Fuji Fine-Pixs with 5Mb sensor. Still got it!

Glanville Fritillary (Melitaea cinxia) at Hurst Castle (I think) just opposite the Isle of Wight UK.

Many, many years ago.

High Brown Fritillary, Arnside Knot, Cumbia on sunny sunday in 2013. Unlike Northumberland today where it hasn't stop raining heavily 🌧️ all day 😬

A Wall brown #butterfly came to visit the back garden today! Almost assumed it was just another gatekeeper, but then noticed he had rather more complex patterns. A bit the worse for wear, but welcome and delightful nonetheless. #Entomology #BackGardenEntomology #ButterfliesUK
