If #burnham wants to cut benefits he could do so quite easily by getting corporations to pay a living wage instead of bonuses and dividends. In fact just make it illegal for any business to payout bonuses or dividends while any employee qualifies for in-work benefits.
'What has Andy Burnham actually achieved on housing in Manchester?'
Labour abandon the working class, getting rid of council housing. Manchester City housing is far too expensive!

Andy Burnham made a series of lofty, if unspecific, promises in a speech on Monday, billed as an opportunity to set out his policy agenda

Journalismus in Zeiten digitaler Aufmerksamkeitsökonomie

"We have heard this speech before. We heard it from the same podium tradition two years ago, when a different leader, in a different accent, announced his own ten year mission to transform Britain. Starmer too promised devolution. Starmer too promised an end to trickle down economics. Starmer too spoke of grassroots accountability and a new politics built from the ground up."

Strip the accent from Andy Burnham's first big speech and you are left with Keir Starmer's script, performed by a more popular actor, for an audience the

I don't think any of us really knows at this stage how good a job Andy Burnham is going to do as PM, assuming he gets the job (as seems overwhelmingly likely).

I for one am certainly keeping an open mind for now.

I'm sure there are many criteria on which he can be judged, but one criterion I shall be using is this:

If the right-wing media publish endless vitriolic articles saying how terrible he is (probably accusing him of being antisemitic, that's usually how it works), then I shall assume he must be doing something right.

Any government which passes this law has ceased to be a #Labour government. It has become a #Fascist government.

Let us all hope that #Burnham will personally vote against it today.

#burnham the frontrunner to be the next PM, just hired a Thames Water lobbyist as his chief of staff. James Purnell's old firm helped water companies fight off fines and regulation, and now he decides what Andy Burnham focuses on

James Purnell was chief executive of Flint Global, paid by Thames Water, BP, Apple and Amazon to help them resist government oversight.

#polanski the #Green party leader in England and Wales, asked why the Labour government appeared to be “so keen on bringing in corporate lobbyists into the heart of Downing Street”. “This is starting to feel like a bit of a Blair and Starmer tribute act, with Labour Together’s Josh Simons also expected to have a senior role,” he said.

#Burnham's silly "No 10 north" stunt yesterday made me make a map.
If you draw a 3×3 grid on England's extreme points, Manchester is very much in the middle square.
If you include the whole of the UK, it is in the southern third!

(edit, updated to highlight Manchester more clearly; edit 2, updated to western point of NI and added midpoint lines)

Burnham’s promise of ‘change’ will be judged on what comes next

HEAVY on rhetoric, light on detail, Andy Burnham set out his vision for “change,” delivered symbolically from the People’s History Museum in Manchester this morning.
