Finland is not known for archaeological marvels from ancient civilizations as the people that lived here millennia ago left very little behind. Burial cairns, like this 3000-year-old cairn in Meilahti I photographed about three weeks ago, are the most conspicuous remnants of the distant past. Most of them are on the coast. Incredibly, this particular cairn still had remains of burnt human bones when it was excavated.
I wonder what the landscape looked like when the stones were placed there. At least the cairn must have been much closer to the sea than it is now due to the post-glacial rebound. The view is still pretty today, until you see what is on the other side...
