November 3rd was first celebrated as a national holiday in 1868. Tenchō-setsu (天長節) marked the birthday of Emperor Meiji (明治天皇) until his death in 1912.
In 1927 the holiday was revived as Meiji-setsu (明治節), but discontinued with the creation of Culture Day in 1948.
