In a potential nanoscale breakthrough, scientists at Brown reveal 80-atom boron ‘buckyball’

Chemists at Brown University have shown the first experimental evidence that carbon buckyballs, which launched the nanotechnology revolution, have a cousin made from 80 atoms of the element boron.

Introducing Boron Buckyballs

A buckminsterfullerene, also known as a buckyball, is typically a fullerene consisting of sixty carbon atoms (C60) arranged in a way that resembles a football-like sphere. Extending this arrangemen…

I created these carbon macromolecules for Scientific American several years ago (and am just getting around to posting now 🤣 )

The fullerenes (the buckyballs, C70 and C60) were extremely fun to map out and render.

I still haven’t had much chance to carve this year, or catch up with the #PrinterSolstice prompts, so until I can, here’s a carbon-themed print from my portfolio: Millie Dresselhaus (née Spiewak; November 11, 1930 – February 20, 2017). She was a professor of physics and electrical engineering at MIT, known as the Queen of Carbon Science.

Happy birthday to Millie Dresselhaus (née Spiewak; November 11, 1930 – February 20, 2017). She was a professor of physics and electrical engineering at MIT, known as the Queen of Carbon Science.

In this linocut I've shown her in front of a carbon nanotube. She was recognized for her work on graphite, graphite intercalation compounds, fullerenes (a form of carbon known as buckyballs, 🧵1/n

I think I already answered this. I believe they are "#BuckyBall" joints.

Slide some sticks or tree limbs into them to easily build the framework for a portable shelter.

The protruding "balls" would make it easier to slide the completed structure into place across the ground.

Much easier to carry around than entire tents with poles & canvas.

(If I'm right, they predate Buckminster Fuller's invention by a couple of thousand years.) 🤔

Der Buckyball musste heute endlich mal gebaut werden. Teamarbeit eines Oberstufenkurses in der Chemiestunde.
