Exactly, and the harms absolutely did not stop at slavery in CA.

Imo a huge improvement of something like reparations to peicemeal, every family for themselves lawsuits, is that it levels the playing field. The families who can bring the sorts of suits like the Bruces were essentially already economic elites. However their workers, who were likely largely Black, aren't compensated.

Reparations ensures we're all included.

Bruce’s Beach was a rare resort for Black residents of Manhattan Beach starting in 1912, until city seized it in 1924

The Guardian

A look at the comparable-sized land just south of the property shows approximate total property value of >150 million. This includes development, but bear in mind that the Bruce family never had the chance to invest in development.

It really feels like the county is capitalizing on the relative poverty that this injustice created in the first place. #reparations #BrucesBeach

It's great that something is finally being done, but 20 million is far too low, and is simply a continuation of the injustice. The Bruces' asking valuation of 120k in 1924, invested in the stock market, would be worth more than 2 billion today. #BrucesBeach

@MikeElgan The case of #BrucesBeach seems like a model for how reparations should work:

Compensation for a specific harm to a specific person, with the beneficiaries being the confirmed heirs of those harmed. The paper trail has to be pretty watertight, and the line of succession pretty short, otherwise you generate absurdities trying to unwind the unknowns of history.
