What a strange experience - browsing the web with brow.sh, a web browser for the console that does all sorts of tricks to turn web packages into "ASCII art": it runs Firefox in headless mode in the background, and samples colors from a screenshot.

The use case is maybe rather limited, but turning very old IT hardware into an up-to-date communication device is one.
@nickbearded FYI

#browsh #hacks #console

Discovered #browsh. It's a browser for the terminal that fully support multimedia if you like big pixels everywhere. It's basically #firefox with a different UI that I think use the render of the vanilla Firefox to generate. It needs a mouse for now that is a bit sad cause I wanted to use it on my no graphic setup. Still, really fun #browser.
@mcc How does it work? Is it similar to #Carbonyl, #Browsh or #Chawan? Is it open source? Good luck!
@RL_Dane @sotolf @pkw @mirabilos Then you can use #Browsh, which is based on Firefox.
So on my #einkcyberdeck I want to be able to use Firefox. But I want to use it in the most efficient way possible (running headless). That's why I've been looking at the #browsh project because they are doing something similar (using Firefox in marionette headless mode). My needs are actually a lot simpler than theirs, because I don't need to extract the text or deal with simulating graphics. https://github.com/browsh-org/browsh

It would be nice to compare #browsh and #carbonyl

How neat: browsh, a modern text-based browser for the terminal.

“It renders anything that a modern browser can; HTML5, CSS3, JS, video and even WebGL.”

I've lost whoever shared this, but thanks to them. A browser with a bunch of interesting features. There's custom CSS, which I've wondered about for a while: why don't I look at websites the way I want to? The nature of HTML is such that it *is* structured information, why not display that how I want?

I haven't actually tried it out yet - I'll have a go over Christmas. And there's a few features that I already recognise as 'good' from #Vivaldi. So let's see.

Ideally what I want is #vim in browser form - I use #vimium (and as #arc is #chromium I should be ok to carry on with that) and I keep toying with the idea of #lynx or #browsh and a bunch of faffing to modify them to my desires. But let's give Arc a bash and see what's gwarning.

What’s Good About the Arc Browser

I was a little skeptical of Arc, a new web browser from The Browser Company of New York. Ooo la la. Yeah, well, I run the Fart Factory of Bend. A small irony is that the pandemic means they aren&#8…

@maxim
I have a similar one now (Novatel MiFi 6620L), it works surprisingly good during blackouts, esp. compared to the phone.
If only there were any antennas in stock anywhere in the country. Anyway it gets me a whopping 1.5mbps on a super-congested network during peak hours when there is no electricity. No need to use #browsh anymore. 😆
