Posting a mimic today despite the fact that my inner outrage wants a long diatribe cursing congress and the corrupt fools within this administration.

However, a mimic is more soothing to the soul. This is a Brown Thrasher, one of 8 species in North America, It is the most widespread, followed closely by the Sage Thrasher. More common to the eastern 2/3 of the country. Labelled as a strong singer with a wide repertoire, the odd thing is I have never heard or recorded one singing. I hear them call which is sort of a click or smack. A beautiful bird, the eyes are mesmerizing. They like to hide in the thick brush so it may be hard to find them. They will overwinter in our area.

Thrasher in the Tangle

This Brown Thrasher was perched near the top of an oak tree at the forest’s edge. There were two of them. I couldn’t help but wonder—was it the same pair that nested in the bush just outside our front door one summer? Maybe. They have a way of returning without announcement.

Hidden Singer

This morning, a Brown Thrasher (Toxostoma rufum) made an appearance, slipping through the brush with its usual quiet confidence.

Watchful Thrasher

Charlie and I spent an hour or so sitting in the backyard this morning. Before that, I filled up the bird feeders. Interestingly, the pigeons mobbed my old post feeder before I moved on. Apparently, they've decided I'm not a threat, though they still maintain a healthy and wise respect for Charlie, scattering when he came near.

While watching, listening, and contemplating life, a brown thrasher (Toxostoma rufum) appeared—the first I've seen this year. Brown thrashers belong to the Mimidae family, along with mockingbirds and catbirds. I've yet to photograph a catbird, though they always seem to be around, unseen.

My photo gallery features over 1300 carefully selected images. While most are chosen for their visual appeal, a few stand out as novelty shots. Feel free to explore my gallery at:

Meh! So-so video of a Brown Thrasher singing. Was zoomed all the way out and balancing elbows on a mailbox...
