#FotoVorschlag: Dem Boden ganz nah // Very close to the ground

This #brownAlgae stays close to the seabed with the help of its warty, bulbous #holdfast that attaches to rocks. A fast growing, annual #seaweed, it can reach up to 4 metres in length and is found at depths of up to 35 metres. In autumn, it begins fruiting and starts to decay, with the #bulb often washing up on the #shore.

Bull Kelp (Nereocystis luetkeana) is a brown algae that can grow up to 118 ft tall, with a single hollow stalk topped by a carbon-monoxide-filled pneumatocyst and dozens of long blades. It is the only kelp known to drop spore patches near its holdfast, ensuring the right concentration of spores settles nearby.

"unlike #animals that carry two complete sets of chromosomes, #BrownAlgae only carry the male V or the female U chromosome, determining their sex... brown #algae gametes engage in a mesmerizing mating dance... Female gametes fix quickly onto substrates and release a pheromone in seawater to attract males. Male gametes actively swim using two flagella in progressively closer circles"

Comprehensive analysis reveals hidden genomic evolution of brown algae

Covering over 70% of Earth's surface, the oceans are home to countless life forms that maintain ecological balance and support human well-being. Among these, brown algae (Phaeophyceae) play a crucial role in sustaining coastal habitats, supporting marine biodiversity, and combating climate change through carbon capture. While they have long captured the interest of the scientific world, the genomic and evolutionary history of these organisms has remained largely unexplored.

Similar to other eukaryotes, brown algae exhibit transcriptome conservation that is consistent with the molecular hourglass model during differentiation in embryonic development.

Phycologists discover what makes some brown algae shimmer and others not

Compartments of consistently sized, tightly packed microspheres are what makes some brown algae shimmer like opal. The Kobe University discovery not only sheds light on the mechanism behind the alga's structural coloration, it is also the first to spot the effect in an order of brown algae other than the two where it was known to occur.

Decoding the shared genetic toolkit for male sex determination

Researchers from the Max Planck Institute for Biology Tübingen broke new ground by demonstrating that an HMG-box gene in brown algae is crucial for determining male sex. This breakthrough significantly expands our understanding of sex-determination mechanisms in eukaryotic organisms. Until now, master sex-determination genes had been identified in only a select number of vertebrates and plants. Published in Science, this study illuminates the evolutionary parallels in developmental pathways between animals and seaweeds, despite their millions of years of independent evolution. It highlights the recurrent use of a shared genetic ‘toolkit’ across distant lineages for vital biological functions. Beyond offering deeper insights into brown algae's reproductive biology, this research explores distant evolutionary convergences.
