The brown bear was the most sacred animal in Finnish mythology; it was taboo to call it by name. The killing of a bear was followed by a great feast in its honour, in which people tried to convince the bear's spirit that it had died accidentally rather than being murdered. Afterwards, the bear's skull was hung high in a pine tree so its spirit could re-enter the heavens.
