If we look further back, those tower houses may, themselves, have been inspired by older building going all the way back to the iron age brochs of Atlantic Scotland, some of which, like the 13 metre tall Broch of Mousa, still stand to this day and are a testament to the strength of this style of building.

Miller's design was inspired, at least in part, by the Scottish Baronial tradition encapsulated by 16th century tower houses, and I wonder if Stevenson was similarly inspired when looking for a design for a lighthouse which could withstand the full force of the formidable waves and swell whipped by Scottish winter storms.

Looking up at one of the tower-like stairwells of James Miller's ealy 1900s Glasgow Royal Infirmary buildings, I was struck by how similar they are to the lighthouses designed by Robert Stevenson almost a century earlier, such as the one on the Bell Rock (the world's oldest surviving sea-washed lighthouse).
