The person who made the original Facebook post got a good number of replies. Though the building looks like a house, most likely it was a water-storage place and pump house, holding a water supply for Brattleboro Retreat or maybe the Retreat farm. The building is said to have sunk some distance into the ground, which could explain its low-to-the-ground appearance.
Mystery evidently solved.

While Island Park was not IN Brattleboro, it was a huge part of life here.
The Brattleboro Historical Society must be well above average in its field. People there make available interesting and often heavily researched materials for people to learn from and enjoy. And it is not all strictly local. Topics such as Brattleboro Retreat, J. Estey & Co., Rudyard Kipling, and others may be of interest to people anywhere, particularly specialist researchers.

I moved to Brattleboro in 1970 for a job at Bratteboro Retreat. Many stories of the flooding of the Retreat Meadow were still around in those days. Before the Vernon Dam was put in, that whole part of the Retreat property was a very big vegetable garden. Back then, the Retreat had a large number of state funded chronic patients. So many decades later, memory is frail; but I swear one of the patients told me he had worked on that part of the Retreat Farm. Two of the people I worked with were born at the Retreat, their father, Mr. Mitchell (not sure I ever knew his first name) having been the Retreat farmer.
In exchange for allowing its land to be flooded, the Retreat got a permanent really, really low electricity rate. The Retreat's Comptroller, Charlie Landry, used to encourage us to turn off lights, not to save electricity but to burn out fewer light bulbs.

So sorry to learn of the death of Bob DuCharme. I knew him from our work at Brattleboro Retreat. My memory is uncertain as to whether he was an employee or consultant. I keep thinking he may have been an Employee Assistance representative. It seems to me he was brought in, in large part, for his public speaking ability. What I do remember vividly is that he was a man of charm, grace, and good humor. RiP

Haunted Brattleboro seems to be a theme this month. So, I suppose I should at least mention that the original part of the Brattleboro building where I live has been deemed to be haunted. I have lived in this building, the Jacob Estey Homestead, since 1985(!) and have never seen anything here; but I have heard a lot, and some of the creaks and groans of floors and cupboard door hinges sound like language of some sort: - far better, in my opinion, than electronic voice phenomena (EVPs). Far and away the main sounds, that appear to be intelligible, say "Thank you." It is great to be appreciated; but I have never gotten an answer when I ask what I am being thanked for. Maybe this is on a need to know basis.
I own spiritualism books written by William George Langworthy Taylor who, as a boy, grew up in a home where one of the boarders was Katie Fox of spiritualism's famous Fox Sisters. One of these volumes, in fact, was previously owned by the Fox Family Society. And, not totally incidentally, I graduated from the University of Maine in the same graduating class as Stephen King.
Brattleboro Retreat was my employer for over twenty years.
Hauntings seem to be on my trail.

Personally, I would not characterize electro-convulsive therapy (ECT) as inhumane, as this NewsBreak article does. Not a lot of treatment options were available years ago and ECT showed some promise. As I understand it, ECT is still available for a few cases, with informed consent.
