Clarke era stato scelto nel 2019 dopo l'esperienza universitaria a Gonzaga e aveva avuto un immediato successo nella maggiore lega di basket al mondo, ottenendo un posto nel miglior quintetto dei debuttanti e mantenendo una media di 12,1 punti e 5,9 rimbalzi a partita, la migliore della sua carriera. Nel 2022 Clarke aveva firmato un'estensione di quattro anni del contratto da 50 milioni di dollari con Memphis.
