Last weekend was a bank holiday weekend. and weather was awful, so most of Sunday and Monday was spent #crafting. As usual the full story is in the free #kofi post https://ko-fi.com/post/Bank-Holiday-weekend--means-crafting-weekend-12-Y8Y11NIUD8
On sunday we made a small #box with magnetic lid (this was the third attempt and finally we managed to make it) and a small #fabric minibag.
Results are pretty nice, although both projects have some "alignment" issue (explained in the post).

Boxes are versatile objects. In addition to their presentation function, we consider them exhibition spaces in their own right, where books, prints, multiples, and original works van be brought together to form a coherent whole. It is also with this in mind that we organize exhibitions featuring our boxes in the front space of our studio. A small exhibition space can contain many others.

We are currently exploring how a box can also serve as exhibition furniture, beyond the traditional portfolio or clamshell box: as a frame, base, pedestal, a podium, or even a modular combination of these. We are preparing this type of exhibition furniture in collaboration with visual artist @ivoschouten for his upcoming solo show @boox.space, which will open on 10 October. As a preview and introduction to Ivo's work, we share some preliminary sketches of the box in the making and views from his previous exhibitions @icoon_hoekvanholland.

Ivo Schouten's works move between 2D and 3D, are characterized by clear compositions and often have a modular character. Partly due to an interest in architecture and structures, spatial works or references to spatiality often arise. They are based on a clear idea of form and colour and thus frame Ivo's views, without it becoming dogmatic. In contrast to the rigid forms, there is a meticulous manual making process that shows itself in its subtlety. The different layers in the work – sleek lines, angular, open and flexible – give freedom to the viewer and form an impetus to broaden the view.

Another #crafting project completed.
This is my seecond attempt in creating a #memocube with a drawer and hinged lid.
Although the second attempt it is still a complex project, and I have still made several planning mistakes, but compared to the first attempt the result is much better. More information on the free #kofi post: https://ko-fi.com/post/Making-a-box-with-lid-and-drawer-V7V71KYIL0

Fifteen years ago, I put on a penguin suit and obtained my PhD for an exhaustive study with the rather dry title 'Identity and Christian-Muslim Interaction: Medieval Art of the Syrian Orthodox from the Mosul Area'. This was followed by a postdoctoral fellowship at the Sorbonne in Paris and a short research period at Konstanz University.

Having specialised in medieval art from the Middle East for many years, I am now a full-time box maker, catering for contemporary artists, designers and photographers. I have swapped my suit for an apron, my desk for a work bench. Sadly, most of the works of art and architecture that I researched in Lebanon, Syria and Iraq has been damaged or destroyed in the recent wars.

Although I have been making boxes for some time now — perhaps precisely because of it — people still quite regularly ask me, 'But don't you miss working with your head?'

Ting-a-ling!

As sociologist Richard Sennett argues in his highly recommended book on craftsmanship, this distinction between mental and manual labour is superficial. True craftsmanship involves a continuous dialogue between concrete practices and thinking. As Sennett puts it, it involves 'making connections between head and hand.' He shows how the work of the hand can inform the work of the head.

Making is thinking — with your head, with your hands, and with your heart.

Another week another project, this time I made a hinged lid #memocube with drawer.

It was my first complex #boxmaking project (second box made so far)

As usual all the details are in my free #kofi post: https://ko-fi.com/post/A-Memo-Cube-With-Drawer-and-Hinged-Lid-F1F21IE268

For this project I haven't found any tutorial, so I did a mix and match of tutorial and improvised a little!

Here the pictures of the finished project.
