@HyL

I have no doubt that #Edmonton could significantly reduce the urban #HeatIsland effect by remediating all communities presently without treed #boulevards between the concrete #sidewalks and the #asphalt streets to having such features.

I don't know if new neighbourhoods are still developed this way, but it is clear from observing where frontyard fencelines are set that there IS sufficient setback along many (all?) such neighbourhoods ro accomplish this without disturbing private property in the least.

Even prior to experiencing a #HeatDome and sustained #HeatWaves my neighbourhood was a nightmare of no-#shade heat when throughout the summers for any #pedestrian.

Sure, some homeowners plant trees but vanishingly few have a broad enough canopy to shade even the sidewalk. None cover the black asphalt.

(3) Impressions from #Brussels #Belgium: Some #roads are incredibly wide, I measured up to 75m (246ft) on the Waterloo Boulevard. This is twice as wide as a normal #highway in germany.

The city development of Brussels was only very loosely regulated in the #1960s and 70s, in consequence many #historic buildings were demolished, big #boulevards constructed and high rise business districts sprung up. This effect is called #Brusselization.

In the specific case of the Waterloo Boulevard there are luxury brand shops on the sides and nine car lanes in the middle. This combination of destinations and high speed routes on the same axis comes with a very high safety risk for pedestrians and cyclists, as @notjustbikes discusses on his excellent #podcast #theurbanistagenda in the episode “The staggering Ignorance of Traffic Engineers”.

Can #Tokyo’s charms be #replicated elsewhere? | The Economist

The real Tokyo, as any #denizen of the world’s most #populous #metropolis knows, is found in the smallest of #spaces. #Japan’s #capital is not a #city of grand #arterial #boulevards. Its lifeblood flows instead through tangles of narrow #alleys, up the #stairs of slim #buildings and into tiny #shops and cramped #eateries.
