Filipinos putting groceries over gadgets, study reveals

Manila, Philippines – Filipino families are putting health, savings, and nutrition at the top of their priorities, according to a new Boston Consulting Group study surveying more than 1,500 households nationwide.

The study found that 70% of families rank financial preparedness for health emergencies as a key concern, followed by 68% who aim to build savings and 64% focused on improving daily nutrition.

Decisions about groceries, investments, and household spending often involve multiple family members, reflecting a culture of shared responsibility and collective care.

BCG identified six primary family structures, from single-earner nuclear households to extended multi-generational families, each showing distinct financial patterns and decision-making styles.

Experts say understanding these family structures is essential for businesses and policymakers seeking to design effective products, services, and policies.

Women typically oversee day-to-day household expenses, while men manage long-term financial decisions, but most choices are made collaboratively.

Overseas Filipino Workers continue to play a significant role in family decisions, contributing income through remittances and participating via digital channels despite physical distance.

The report warns that many businesses still treat consumers as individuals rather than as households, creating gaps between what families need and what products or policies provide.

Panelists from McDonald’s Philippines, Zalora, and other firms highlighted that aligning strategies with family dynamics could improve financial stability, health security, and overall quality of life for Filipino households.
