Unpublicized City Hall Polling Reveals Broad Support for Bike Projects, Blue Hill Ave. Bus Rapid Transit

StreetsblogMASS has obtained internal City of Boston polling documents that show a strong majority of city residents support the proposed Blue Hill Avenue bus transitway project, and that a plurality of residents support bike lane projects, even when it comes at the expense of car lanes and on-street parking.

I would like to write a letter to my newly elected city council rep, about him not supporting a plan for center lane dedicated buses.

I keep reading news articles in which he says the most car centric claptrap.

> The plan would increase congestion.

Not for the busses, and the people who ride them.

@my_roxbury

Next time ask who/what it would increase congestion for.

Would a dedicated bus lane increase congestion for bikes? For busses? For motorcycles? For pedestrians?

Under-served neighborhoods can't have nice things like dedicated bus lanes because ... wait for it ... (the possible threat of ) gentrification. 🙃

Yup.

How's that for a catch 22?

Yes, gentrification is real, and needs to be addressed. But using that as an excuse for not giving folks better city services is weak sauce.

When I complained that my city council representative used the phrase "would increase congestion" when referring to dedicated bus lanes, as being car centric, I was told no, I was mistaken. That wasn't car centric. 🫠

For it to qualify as being car centric they would have had to say something like "more lanes". 🙃

There was a moment of jubilation in the Ashur Restaurant on Roxbury Street last night when Said “Coach” Ahmed learned he had narrowly won the 11-way preliminary vote for the District 7 City Council seat. Then came the realization of what lies ahead. “What we have done in the last nine months was nothing,” Ahmed said in an interview. “The work has just begun. We have to focus
