SophiePfA couple of weeks ago I finished reading a novel about the Napoleonic Wars, specifically from the point of view of the civilian population in the German regions that were "allied" (more like occupied) with France.

The book I read culminated in the Battle of Nations. A battle that was one of, if not the biggest battle till that point in time. It saw almost half a million souls fight and a good fifth of those die on the field or field hospitals. So, unless a soldier was just lightly wounded, a scratch or bruise, the chances for survival were slim to say the least.

Whenever I finish a really good book, I need some time to process it. So it was with this one as well. This time, though, the image of a lock of hair given as a token of affection popped into my mind a lot. That was the base for this image. The ribbon holding the hair is longer than it would be usually, for aesthetics and also in a way to symbolise the life, that had a long and twisted path behind it just to be brought to the slaughter. And then there are the poppies and the skeletal hand, both indication death and eternal rest. Of course some blood for effect both on the main objects and also in the background.

I did write something like a letter and put that in the background, it was a last minute idea and I did like the thought of some last words for the person that gave the lock of hair. They are fading into the background, but they exist in the midst of death and bloodshed.
Call me sentimental.
