Ventoy is a great idea, but it's a long time since I used a piece of user-facing software with such little attention to UX.

Every time I try to use it, I end up spending an entire afternoon looking for info that could all be in one simple HowTo page. Or digging for error details that could be provided in a verbose interface. Especially in the GUI. At some point I will collect all my grizzles in one place, and give some constructive feedback.

Working on my emergency computer toolkit. 5 USB sticks of 16GB. They consist of :

  • The Gentoo Live USB disk
  • Hiren's Boot CD PE
  • SystemRescueCD
  • Clonezilla
  • Portable Apps Platform

The last is something I could run in a Window's install and have the apps I feel I need at any one time, regardless what the computers owner put on.

What do you keep for computer emergencies?

Finally got around to working out how to use Ventoy. It's a tool for creating a reusable boot USB, which can boot any GNU/Linux ISO image you copy onto it. If there's more than one, it boots to a menu. Very handy.

The documentation for GNU/Linux isn't super thorough, and assumes I naturally do everything from the command line (I don't). So it was a bit fiddly to get it working. But now I've figured it out, I think I'll be using it a lot.

Ventoy

Ventoy is an open source tool to create bootable USB drive for ISO files. With ventoy, you don't need to format the disk again and again, you just need to copy the iso file to the USB drive and boot it.

Oh !
