Covering (colonialism,) the struggle independence and post-colonialism, US meddling, dictatorships, ideally until "today"
Context: my daughter asking question (her mother is from Venezuela).
Her mother's position is more or less, Maduro ist bad (with which I somewhat agree), the left is bad and responsible for everything that wrong.
I think that is inadequate and too simplistic.

Open Veins of Latin America: Five Centuries of the Pillage of a Continent (Spanish: Las venas abiertas de América Latina) by Eduardo Galeano.
Edit: TIL about https://lateinamerikaarchiv.de/ containing many books on Latin Amerika. While the page is German, the referenced books are largely available in either Spanish or English as well
