The intro to the new Malcolm in the Middle is quite the thing. Kids punch police officers. Santa Claus gets kicked in the face. A barrel full of faeces detonates inside a family car. This recap of previous episodes is so full of gross-out comedy and family fights that a grandma grabs her teenage grandson and crushes his testicles until he squeals. “And,” intones a voiceover at its end, “someone actually asked for more of this.”
Did they? It’s been 20 years since the Emmy-winning sitcom about an outrageous working-class US family with the titular child genius went off air. It’s a show whose fans remember it fondly for never dipping in quality throughout its seven seasons. But were they really clamouring for more?
“It was in all the magazines,” says Frankie Muniz, AKA lead character Malcolm. In 2015, he casually tweeted that it would be “so cool” to catch up with the characters and “I couldn’t believe the response. I was shocked.” Although, really, he shouldn’t have been. After all, he’s spent decades getting first-hand experience of how much more loved the show is than he ever dreamed...

When Erin Stavrianos told her mother she would be appearing naked in a gallery, the initial reaction was one of shock.
Fortunately, her mother has come around to the idea and is even planning to come and see the event in Bolt Theatre on St Patrick’s Quay, Cork.
Erin, who works as a chef and part-time actor, is among those baring their souls as part of the living gallery experience. Janette Towey, Matt Real, Oliver Fahy, Owen Warren and Sam Torres are also joining the cast of Bare, which runs from April 1 until April 5.
Darren Kelleher, who owns and runs Bolt Studios, came up with the idea to give people the chance to interact with art in a way that has never been done before in Cork.
All performers will completely strip down for the event, both physically and emotionally. Each performer has taken on the role of a character who will converse with audience members throughout the course of the night...

The naked performer is a familiar presence on Berlin’s stages. But one wonders: was this always the case? In the city’s dance, theatre and performance scene, nudity appears so frequently that audiences are rarely shocked. The appearance of an unclothed performer carries a particular tension. But is it still a tension between artistic freedom, vulnerability and spectacle? Or is it whether nudity on stage is still radical at all?
The topic comes to mind following Kysy Fischer and ABA NAIA’s restaging of Super Superficial at Hebbel am Ufer and the opening of Balkan Erotic Epic. The Exhibition by Marina Abramović. In the past few years, I’ve also encountered it in works such as André Uerba’s Æffective Choreography, Jefta van Dinther’s Dark Field Analysis and Eddie Peake’s Portent. Then there are the large-scale productions of Florentina Holzinger, which frequently feature predominantly unclothed performers.
Holzinger said in an interview with Numéro Berlin in 2023, “I’ve always been more interested in what’s underneath, what’s happening ‘behind closed curtains’. I’ve found it somehow liberating to show the body at work and not just in anything private or sexualised.” In her work, a naked figure becomes less an object of desire than a theatrical instrument.
