Authorities have moved to clear up long-standing confusion around Sandy Bay Beach, confirming it has never been officially designated as a naturist beach.
South African National Parks (SANParks) said the secluded cove forms part of Table Mountain National Park and is subject to standard park regulations, despite its decades-long reputation as a ‘clothing-optional’ spot.
The clarification follows complaints from members of the naturist community, who claim some visitors have recently been harassed while sunbathing nude at the beach.
SANParks stressed that rangers have not been instructed to target naturists, but are conducting routine patrols to ensure compliance with laws and maintain safety in the area.
Longstanding reputation under scrutiny
Tucked beneath the Karbonkelberg and accessible only on foot from Llandudno or Hout Bay, Sandy Bay has long attracted visitors seeking privacy.
Over the years, it developed an informal reputation as a naturist-friendly beach, with some tourism references dating back to the 1980s and 1990s.
Naturist advocates argue that decades of use effectively established the beach as a de facto clothing-optional space.

The reason why Cape Town’s annual World Naked Bike Ride was cancelled has been revealed.
Typically, the Bike Ride takes place the day before the Cape Town Cycle Tour. As such, it would have occurred on Saturday, 7 March 2026.
Unfortunately for the barenaked ladies and gentlemen who would have participated, event organisers had to unceremoniously pull the plug on the 18th edition. Here’s why:
PRESSURE FROM CITY OF CAPE TOWN
In a recent radio interview with CapeTalk’s Lester Kiewit, event coordinator and representative Marthinus Pretorius was asked about why the World Naked Bike Ride was called off.
Pretorius explained that the City of Cape Town – who usually gives the go-ahead on the event – exhibited hostility this time around while also imposing new conditions. These conditions called for Bike Ride participants to be fully clothed.
Per Cape Town Etc:
We [usually] just give notice to the City that we are going to do a protest, and then there is a meeting in line with the Public Gatherings Act. In that meeting, they give us the go-ahead.
We have been struggling to get answers out of the City of Cape Town… they try to avoid answering me or speaking to us.

Between June and August, national park officials from across the country flagged signs, brochures, exhibits and more for review by the Trump administration as it seeks to edit the history of America’s public lands. Materials on the chopping block include those that display “improper partisan ideology,” “a false reconstruction of American history,” or anything that “inappropriately disparages Americans” or “emphasizes matters unrelated to the beauty, abundance, or grandeur” of parks’ natural features.
Though information about the Civil War, Black and Indigenous history and climate change were targeted extensively, those weren’t the only topics called into question.
SFGATE reviewed a database with hundreds of materials that employees sent to National Park Service leadership over the summer. An anonymous group that described themselves as “civil servants on the front lines” leaked the material, along with detailed information on how the review process is being carried out internally.
“This data belongs to the American people, who need to know what is being done in their name,” reads a website created by the group. The Washington Post first reviewed and confirmed the authenticity of the internal government database.

The 2026 World Naked Bike Race in Cape Town, traditionally held the day before the Cape Town Cycle Tour, was cancelled amid growing pressure from local authorities, reports Cape {town} Etc.
The event, held annually for the past 18 years, was reportedly cancelled after the City of Cape Town imposed new conditions requiring participants to be fully clothed.
Event coordinator and representative Marthinus Pretorius said this year’s event faced growing pressure, uncertainty, and even hostility toward the naturist community in Cape Town. The problems reportedly began with last year’s Naked Bike Ride, with the City citing sections 9 and 22 of the Sexual Offences Act of 2007. Although the 2025 event proceeded, this year’s was cancelled.
The event is usually held in coordination with the City of Cape Town’s guidelines, with Pretorius stating in an interview with CapeTalk, ‘we [usually] just give notice to the City that we are going to do a protest, and then there is a meeting in line with the Public Gatherings Act. In that meeting, they give us the go-ahead.’
The growing tension led to unresolved questions, making it difficult to proceed with the event: ‘We have been struggling to get answers out of the City of Cape Town…they try to avoid answering me or speaking to us.’
Pretorius went on to emphasise the importance of highlighting the issues faced by the naturist community and promoting body positivity, claiming that police have recently begun telling people to cover up at Sandy Bay, which was declared an unofficial secluded nudist beach in 1996.
The event coordinators have reported the issues and filed a complaint with the Commission for Language, Religious and Cultural Rights...
