Bob Weir, the co-founder and rhythm guitarist of the Grateful Dead, passed away on January 10, 2026, at the age of 78. He died peacefully with family by his side after battling cancer and enduring underlying lung issues. Known as the youngest member of the iconic band during the 1960s, Weir brought high energy and a unique rhythm guitar style that complemented Jerry Garcia's leadership. He joined the band at just 16 and spent more than six decades performing, with his final concerts occurring in August 2025 at Golden Gate Park to mark the band's 60th anniversary. Weir's passing follows the death of fellow founding member Phil Lesh in 2024, leaving Bill Kreutzmann as the only remaining member of the original 1965 lineup. Bob Weir’s contributions helped shape the sound and spirit of the Grateful Dead, leaving a lasting legacy for fans and the music world. His youthful photos from the 1960s capture the early days of a legendary musician whose career spanned generations.

For class today, I printed the two quatrains and the one-line chorus of "The Other One", by Bob Weir and Bill Kreutzmann (The Grateful Dead, "Anthem of the Sun", 1968), three times and cut them into three sets of nine one-line strips each. I carefully handed out the strips to
The Grateful Dead, Aoxomoxoa, 1969 on Warner Bros
This was the third studio LP from The Grateful Dead, and was one of the first albums recorded in 16 tracks on an Ampex MM-1000. It was remixed by Garcia and Lesh in 1971. “China Cat Sunflower” and “St. Stephen” remain among my favorite Dead tunes, though I find it hard to get through “What’s Become Of the Baby.”
My copy—via Salem Flea Marketplace—is a 1971 Terre Haute pressing, with the 1971 remix, on green labels but with the W7 logo on the jacket. I’m still on the hunt for a 1969 issue. (It was included in the Warner Bros. Studio Albums box set, and was put on CD in 2019 by Rhino but not vinyl).

In yesterday's session of my course on The Grateful Dead, we lingered over a line from the song "Let It Grow", by Bob Weir and John Perry Barlow, from the 1973 album "Wake of the Flood": "See the sun sparkle in the reeds; silver beads pass into the sea." It
