Watching birds yesterday and on landing they'd do a quick fluffing shrug, then smoosh that onto feet. The result was a puffier bird, no legs, braced against the cold.

Signed up for Birds of the World - a wealth of information. I was terrible in Biology at University, so this has been a struggle to understand.
Common Bluejay, a great mimic of Red-Tail Hawks that love acorns. They line up for peanuts at our feeder in the morning. Notably, the blue is due to light scattering rather than pigment.

People have also used other creatures like caterpillars -- or bird migration patterns. If I could give any animal the power to predict winter, which would I choose?
I'd pick a bird, like a Blue Jay, and if winter was continuing for 6 six weeks, it would stay blue. If spring was starting--it would turn bright yellow.
