My mom passed in 2022.

The next year, on the anniversary of her death, I was meeting some work friends in the town near my parents' house. The weather was pleasant, so I waited outside a bookshop so that they could spot me. While I was waiting, a street busker played "Summertime", which my mom sung to me when I was a child.

The busker and I eventually started chatting, and he told me to name my favorite song and he would play it. I told him, "You already have." I shared the story of my mom singing Summertime to me when I was very young, and that that day was the one year anniversary of her passing. I eventually did meet up with my friends, and we occupied a table at a nearby cafe for about two hours, chatting and catching up.

Last week, @ceci_dcd and I released two things: A first type design project, BM Bless, and the online shop, www.beamtype.com, on which it can be licensed.

BM Bless is a modern take on a mid-19th century design: the ornamental typeface. Combining code-drawn shapes with hand-drawn ones, the project comes as a set of variable and static fonts made for layering.
