These trees are Black Poplars, possibly hybrids. Notice how they all have a large lower branch facing southwest. I’ve heard this might be a distinctive feature of native Black Poplars, not hybrids.

Can this single feature be enough to identify them as native?

Not sure if this counts for #wildflowerhour, as they won’t flower for several years yet ?! Cuttings from scarce UK native #blackpoplar tree (Populus nigra subsp. betulifolia), taken on 23 Oct, now rooting and in leaf. There are only a about a hundred known different genetic clones , making the tree vulnerable, as it is difficult to propagate from seed. These are commonest clone ‘23’. #trees #woodlands #biodiversity #nature #gardening #wildlifegardening
