On March 19, 1941, the U.S. War Department ordered the creation of the 99th Pursuit Squadron, better known as the Tuskegee Airmen. Their courage in the skies not only contributed to Allied victory, but also challenged stereotypes at home, paving the way for racial integration in the U.S. military and influencing the broader Civil Rights Movement.
