Screwfix marketing flier handed over with the bootlaces I just bought. Ten products on top pages, "Everything you need to prevent mould and damp".

How many of the ten are snakeoil?
How many are actively harmful?
Can you spot where they're trying to get in ahead of the penny dropping for small scale private landlords about #AwaabsLaw ?

Send SAE for details of my eccentric hobbyhorse -- that the only solution to the UK's housing crisis being to compulsorily purchase and demolish millions of buildings - pretty much everything older than 75 years - and replacing them with safe, climate-proofed, properly insulated, energy efficient replacements!

My experience of black mould is that it's generally endemic to a property. Home owners as well as tenants struggle with it.

There may be structural issues that are allowing damp to enter. These can be hard to identify, let alone fix, unless they are obvious.

Otherwise it's down to moist air and lack of adequate ventilation. Drying clothes, cooking, bathing etc all produce moisture.

Often, when people are out at work all day and it's cold in the evening, windows don't get opened. Especially when heating bills are high!

Working from home over the pandemic I saw the mould levels in my flat drop dramatically because I had at least one window open for most of the day, even in winter.

It was easier for me to do some laundry and stick it outside to dry, knowing I could get it in if it rained.

You need to keep treating mould. But again, you need to open windows to do this: anti-mould chemicals are toxic.

Dehumidifiers help.

'Black mould is making my son ill' - the private renters struggling to be heard

Families tell BBC their mould-infested homes are making them ill - Panorama investigates.

UPDATE: Okay, I'm officially chickening out on attempting to clean my #Brita #filterbottle well enough to ensure there is no more mould contamination.

As this design has otherwise met my needs and I already have several unused filters and new, uncontaminated silicone mouthpieces en route, I am going to suck it up and buy a new bottle, but add it into the rigorously-clean-each-compent cycle I do with my #CPAP.

Still, #ick. 🤢

NGL, discovering pink and black mould today makes for a BAD day. The silicone mouthpiece is so contaminated I cannot even wash this crap off, even after soaking.

Gross, and it can't be healthy at all.

Thank goodness the filter straw portion actually became visibly contaminated, or I would still be blissfully unaware of this vile mixture I am straining water through as I drink.

🤢🤢🤢

I did one window yesterday, no condensation today. Just doing the other bedrooms now.

I have a wet vac for windows (and open when I can) and dehumidifiers, but it’s exhausting going round to check/dry//empty/switch on. So hoping this helps.

I also have reflective panels to put behind the radiators…exciting. Can’t afford to put it in, but I’m ready when I can 😂

#Blackmould tends to get more attention as the most dangerous type but that is not necessarily always the case. There is also white mould, pink mould, and green mould. Importantly, all types are #allergens
