Another photo from my training, this time captured during the analysis of a polymer sample under the light microscope βœ¨πŸ”¬

The material is based on a polycondensation reaction of 4,4Β΄-dihydroxybiphenyl with an aliphatic dicarboxylic acid chloride. Using an aqueous phase with sodium hydroxide and a phase transfer catalyst results in a polymer whose structure and properties strongly depend on the ordering of its molecular chains.

It becomes especially interesting when looking at the thermal and optical properties. In differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), the material shows two endothermic transitions. This means that the ordered structure is not lost all at once, but stepwise via a liquid crystalline phase into a fully isotropic state.

Under the polarizing microscope, this order becomes directly visible. The sample exhibits birefringence, meaning direction-dependent refraction of light. This only occurs when regions within the material are organized on a scale comparable to the wavelength of light. These structures are exactly what create the fascinating patterns and colors in the image.

In short, a small window into the world of liquid crystals, somewhere between ordered structure and thermally driven disorder.

I love these moments when chemistry is not only measurable, but also visible.

Experimenting with Double Filters

Yesterday morning I woke up at 5 a.m. It was dark, cold, and quiet β€” the kind of silence that makes you wonder if you should just crawl back into bed. But the sky was clear with some clouds forming near the horizon, and experience told me this could become one of those fiery sunrises worth losing sleep over.

So I packed my Canon 5DsR with the Sigma Art 24–70 mm and headed to the Loonse en Drunense Duinen. Besides chasing light, I had something else in mind β€” a little experiment. I wanted to see what would happen if I combined a polarizing filter with a transparent plastic petri dish (from Corning).

If you’ve ever looked at a car’s rear window through polarized sunglasses and seen those oily rainbow patterns β€” that’s birefringence at work. When two polarizing surfaces interact with certain plastics, they reveal hidden stress patterns in vivid colors.

So I rotated both filters until the sky exploded into gradients of purple, turquoise, and gold. No Photoshop tricks here β€” just light, plastic, and curiosity playing together.

Sometimes, science and art meet right in front of your lens.

Way in which the US has been #Spying by agreements with telecoms and #Internet cos dates back to 2002 summer In 2008 it was called #PRISM although analogy on #Physics refers to #Birefringence phenomenon Maybe there were no #Physicists in the NSA so son of PRISM is nightmare now

Today #calcite is on of the competitors in #Mincup24. That's all I need to know: in memory of Ornella🌈 I'm in #TeamCalcite, or team #sunstone because of the very high #birefringence of #mineral calcite. First picture is from Ornellas🌈 first MineralCup

A contender in this round of #MinCup23, #Calcite comes in several forms, including #Optical Calcite, sometimes called #Iceland Spar or #Iceland Crystal, the strong #birefringence properties are on display in this #photograph as the #crystal creates a small #rainbow-like formation on the right side. This property has made it a candidate for the somewhat mysterious #SunStone from #Viking legend, able to find the Sun despite overcast conditions by looking for the double #refraction.
This form of calcite often cleaves into parallelepiped (parallelogram extended into 3D) sections, such as the one pictured.

Today #Opal & #Calcite compete in #MinCup23. Difficult! But, hey I just visited #Iceland so I vote for Calcite aka #IcelandSpar aka the #Vikings #sunstone a historic navigation instrument due to its #birefringence. Look angel Ornella voted for Calcite in the first Mincup
