Ende November waren wir auf 4450m Höhe auf dem Vulkan Kumanday, bekannter unter Nevado del Ruiz. Kumanday ist die nicht spanische Bezeichnung des Berges. Höher ging es leider nicht, da der Vulkan aktiv ist und immer wieder Rauchwolken auspustet.
Aber unser Ziel war auch nicht der Krater sondern ein ganz besonderer und seltener Vogel, der Violettbart-Helmkolibri (Buffy-Helmetcrest).
Er ist erst seit 2012 eine eigene Art und ist an diesem Vulkan endemisch.
An andren Bergen gibt es noch drei andre Helmkolibris, mit andersfarbigen "Bärten".
Viel bekannt ist über den Vogel nicht, das Brutverhalten ist z.B. nicht erforscht. Als Vogel des Páramo ernährt er sich aber nicht voranging von Nektar wie andere Kolibris sondern von Insekten(larven).

At the end of November, we were at an altitude of 4450 metres on the Kumanday volcano in Colombia, better known as Nevado del Ruiz. Kumanday is the non-Spanish name of the mountain. Unfortunately, we couldn't go any higher as the volcano is active and keeps blowing out clouds of smoke.
But our goal was not the crater but a very special and rare bird, the Buffy-helmetcrest.
It has only been a separate species since 2012 and is endemic to this volcano.
There are three other helmet hummingbirds on other mountains, with different coloured ‘beards’.
Not much is known about the bird, e.g. its breeding behaviour has not been researched. As a bird of the Páramo it does not feed primarily on nectar like other hummingbirds but on insects (larvae).
