The merlin was back after I hadn’t seen it for a week. And apparently it is good at its craft. That’s a dark-eyed junco it has there. Very common here this time of year. #birds #nature #BirdsOfMastodon #BirdsOfPrey #pennsylvania

My first Nankeen Kestrel

According to my bird book, Nankeen Kestrels are common in mainland Australia. Still, this is the first time I’ve spotted one. The bird has a distinctive light-coloured tail with dark tips to the tail feathers:

The bird was very far away, flying and diving above a valley in the Victorian Alps. For that reason, the photos aren’t great. But I do want to record the sighting!

Common name: Nankeen Kestrel
Scientific name: Falco cenchroides
Length: 30-35 cm; wing span: 60-80 cm
Date spotted: 27 December 2025 (summer)
Location: Blue Rag Range Track, Victoria, Australia: 37°06’13.4″S 147°04’00.4″E

Found an eagle along the Fox River yesterday, bucket list bird check! #birds #birdphotography #eagle #birdsofprey
This evening I thought I would share a cool experience I just had 🤗. I was outside, playing with my dogs, and this itty-bitty owl flew across the yard and landed on a corner fence post! I slowly approached so I could take some photos and video, and the little guy actually let me get pretty close. I stopped at about 10-15ft away, took some pics, and just talked and trilled to them. (Yup, I'm that gal lol). They actually trilled back once (cutest noise ever 🥺🫶) and stayed for a few minutes before taking off into the night. Happy hunting, little buddy. Stay safe!

P.S. anybody know which species this is? I'm in Albuquerque, New Mexico, and I would guess this little one wasn't more than 8-10" tall 🤔.
