I just put some peanut bird treats out to appease, make peace with some Blue Jays I had earlier run off. Being it is Sunday and I have time on my hands, I queried my search engine about the wisdom of my action - specifically asking if the birds would ‘hold a grudge’… well, not only do they hold massive grudges, they imprint your face in their memories like they have some bio face recognition neural pathway - then they teach their offspring to recognize and harass you as well. And when I say harass, I mean Jays clustering and shouting at you in numbers. That’s when I remembered they are part of the Corvid family - which includes Crows and Ravens. Very smart birds with long memories. So yeah, not running them off anymore… even put out peanut treats to make up for my oversight. We love our smaller song birds; titmouse, nuthatch, finches, but they seem to share the space well; and the larger woodpeckers just run them off when they feed.
