Ok, while I do understand some of the science behind them, modern very high-resolution imaging tools in the nanometer scale are nothing short of pure #SciFiScience, say nothing of the applications they can unlock.

New Iridium has created a suite of organic chemicals that enable photocatalysis, or light-driven chemistry, eliminating the need for heavy metals or heat as catalysts. Their technology dramatically reduces the energy and time required for a wide variety of chemical reactions, lowering costs and paving the way for green chemistry to become industry standard. With products currently being used by pharmaceutical and chemical companies,

💁🏻‍♀️ TIL: A barn #owl can catch a #mouse in a completely dark room using only its sense of #hearing.

The secret lies in its #feathers – reflective facial disc feathers focus #sound into asymmetrically placed #ears, while serrated wing feathers muffle noise mid-flight. Engineers at #Siemens are now mimicking owl feathers to make quieter #windturbines.

The Secret to a Barn Owl’s Deadly Night Hunting Is Hidden in Its Feathers

A barn owl’s ability to hunt by hearing alone relies on exquisite variations in the structure of its feathers.

What can biology teach us about building better technology? By drawing parallels between microbial networks and the Reticulum protocol, I explore why the future of society looks less like a corporate pyramid and more like a mycelial web.

The Network is a Mycelial Web

Drawing parallels between the decentralised intelligence of microbial networks and the architecture of resilient technologies like Reticulum, this article explores what biology can teach us about building better systems.

On the infrastructure that makes conscience legible

"No problem can be solved from the same level of consciousness that created it."

I keep returning to Edgar Mitchell’s account of his return from the moon — looking back at Earth from beyond its sphere of influence, he found himself overwhelmed by an inner conviction as certain as any equation he’d ever solved: that this beautiful blue world is part of a living system, harmonious and whole, and that we all participate in a universe of consciousness.

Mitchell was a trained engineer and astronaut, not predisposed to mysticism. But something about the impossible perspective broke the Cartesian spell. He came home and spent the rest of his life trying to reconcile the difference between what he’d experienced and what the institutions of his world were capable of understanding.

How do we reconcile the parallax of perception from a distance, to the shortsighted view of global machinations at ground level...

🦎🔴 Engineers at the University of #Würzburg designed a #Mars #rover with wheels that “swim” through sand using figure-eight motions, inspired by the African sandfish #lizard.

That lizard, a native to the #Sahara, burrows and propels itself through sand like a fish through water. Early prototypes sank, but a lighter, wider-wheeled version successfully navigated sandy test tracks, outperforming traditional wheels on loose terrain.

How can we bring the insights of Biomimicry to the field of human inter-being? How can we shift our sense of self and other, our communities of place, purpose and passion, our businesses, our governance structures…everything that we are and do onto a different trajectory using the web of life as our template?

“Piers had been in China for all of two days in 2009 when he was used as a #WhiteMonkey” for the first time. He had travelled to a village in Suzhou, Jiangsu province, to attend a friend’s wedding and had stopped in the village to try a special crab dish at a small restaurant.

Weeks later, a Chinese guest who had been at the wedding told him the restaurant had had an uptick in #business because the locals had heard that a laowai, a foreigner, had been seen dining there, so people had assumed this restaurant must be good.

Piers realised the boss had deliberately seated him in a way to attract attention: “I knew we were sitting outside in a premium spot, but I didn’t pick up on what was going on.”

When #foreigners in China are used this way, they are called a #baihouzi, a white monkey”

This isn’t just a “China-thing”. For decades now western businesses have employed “White Monkeys”. You know them better as suits with an #MBA.
