Another great read from this year in bioacoustics and again by a Canadian Author (go Canada).
This time focusing on underwater acoustics and the evolution of sound and hearing underwater in different species.
Again very comprehensive and fun to read without losing to much depth and enough to follow up on if you want to.

Finally finished this fantastic book.
Very comprehensive without compromising in the depth of information given. The appendix is also really good with lots to follow up.
Sadly Karen Bakker passed away in 2023.
One of the few publications about #bioacoustic that has also been translated into German.
If you are interested in this field this would be a good starting point.

Going deeper into madness.

Bought my first pure #birdsong records lately.

This one is a blast and the story behind is quite interesting. It was recorded by Dr. Michael Schubert (the right hand of Günther Tembrock) in Mongolia in the 1970s.

Would be intersting do to a segment/ talk with people from the former GDR who have been into bioacoustics/ field recording.

Some time ago I signed up for the #Cornell BioacousTalks. There are a lot of great presentations and it is all for free:

You can also find older talks on their YouTube Channel:

The next presentetion about the why and how birds communicate will be held next Wednesday (2025-11-12) by Mason Youngblood (https://masonyoungblood.com/)

@mosgaard
So here are two books I read recently:
https://press.princeton.edu/books/paperback/9780691240978/the-sounds-of-life

^^ This one gives a good overview on the topic of bioacoustics and the current state (2023) of the topic. Good to read and with a lot of adittional litarature in the book to follow up if you are more interested. Sadly the author passed away.

https://www.penguinrandomhouse.com/books/704875/sing-like-fish-by-amorina-kingdon/

^^ very good read on underwater acoustics and how hearing and sound evolved underwater.

The Sounds of Life

An amazing journey into the hidden realm of nature’s sounds

Since I finally switched to another instance here is my #introduction to the new beginning.

I am an acoustical engineer and field recordist. My main interest now is #bioacoustic #ecoacoustic and #fieldrecording.

I've joined mastodon in 2023.

Have been realy happy with the community and resources I found here over time.

One of the best things was probably learning about #faircamp and creating my own site. (thanks to @freebliss )

Whale-SETI: Groundbreaking Encounter with Humpback Whales Reveals Potential for Non-Human Intelligence Communication

December 12, 2023, Mountain View, CA -- A team of scientists from the SETI Institute, University of California Davis and the Alaska Whale Foundation, had a close encounter with a non-human (aquatic) intelligence. The Whale-SETI team has been studying humpback whale communication systems in an effort to develop intelligence filters for the search for extraterrestrial intelligence.

Hallo Fediverse,

The Plodcast - Sound Escape 100: Underwater with grey seals in the Outer Hebrides

In the 100th edition of Sound Escapes, we're on a boat in the Outer Hebrides at anchor near a small island. An underwater microphone captures grey seals swimming around the hull of the small boat while a full moon hangs in the still night. Enjoy a specially extended audio experience to celebrate our 100th episode. Recorded by musician David de la Haye. BBC Countryfile Magazine's Sound Escapes are a weekly audio postcard from the countryside to help you relax and transport you somewhere beautiful, wherever you happen to be. When your wife is away for work so you have breakfast for lunch and dinner (but not breakfast!), and you work through two evenings to put wayyy to much effort into a toy #bioacoustic monitoring simulator.

On the other hand, the simulated creatures now have circadian rhythms, which I'm sure they appreciate.
