Goin' West is an album by American jazz guitarist Grant Green featuring performances recorded in 1962 but not released on the Blue Note label until 1969. It is a loose concept album inspired by Western music. It features pianist Herbie Hancock, bassist Reggie Workman and drummer Billy Higgins.

The All About Jazz review by Colin Fleming stated "Goin' West, though nominally a country and western recording, moves us into the realm of folk music—bluegrass folk music and clippity-clappity cowboy tunes... Having said that, it would be hard to imagine Goin' West being a greater delight, a straight forward, unencumbered jazz delight—finesse jazz is a readily applicable moniker... Goin' West is an intriguing release nonetheless" - Wikipedia

New York City R&B is a 1961 free jazz album originally recorded at a session by bassist Buell Neidlinger but subsequently reissued under joint names with the pianist Cecil Taylor.

Writing for AllMusic, Scott Yanow commented: "The music is quite advanced for the period, although more accessible to the average listener than Taylor's later recordings; one can hear, even in abstract form, his connection to the bebop tradition and to Duke Ellington." - Wikipedia

I've missed out on knowing, who Billy Higgins († 2001) was for almost 60 years, until last week. So in the spirit of best wishes for 2026:

Dance of the Clones - Billy Higgins

No, it's the drummer. What an elegant, excellent, well-versed & melodicly playing rhythmicist.
I've watched all those otherwise non-crediting YT videos already, along the lines of "Extended Drum Solo".
What's your album recommendation for when Mr. Higgins wasn't just featured as a side man?
The more experimental, the more sound painting, the better for me.
Thank you in advance.

Free Form is an album by American trumpeter Donald Byrd featuring Byrd with Wayne Shorter, Herbie Hancock, Butch Warren, and Billy Higgins recorded in 1961 and released on the Blue Note label later in 1966.

The Allmusic review by Michael G. Nastos awarded the album four stars and stated "Free Form is both a smorgasbord of modern jazz styles and a breakthrough album showing the Detroit born trumpeter's versatility and interest in diversity... This may be close to Donald Byrd's best early work, a strong statement that is by no means homogeneous, but expresses many of the avenues in jazz he was exploring while finding his own unique voice on the trumpet" - Wikipedia

Science Fiction is an album by the American avant-garde jazz saxophonist and composer Ornette Coleman, recorded in September and October 1971 and released on Columbia Records in February 1972.

Reviewing the album for Pitchfork, Daniel Felsenthal called it "a one-of-a-kind dispatch from the vibrant, polygenic, and contested lofts of downtown New York" and "a welcome return to the singable, quintessentially Southern melodicism that counterbalanced [Coleman's] dauntless early oeuvre" - Wikipedia
