Due to the continued cost of living crisis in the UK and the increases in most prices, especially food. We've had to take some drastic action to reduce some of the bills.
The crisis started in 2022 and has never let up here.
It's difficult to know exactly how much we were spending before, but we were both spending in the region of £130 a month each... As during 2020, I was doing my mums shopping every 2 weeks as well as my own... and some prices spiked during this time too. But we're talking a combined amount in the £220 range as we weren't duplicating a lot of stuff (meat, bread, milk and so forth). We can buy a larger (and therefore cheaper per KG) pack of some foods to save money too.
In 2023 the avg monthly spend on groceries and basic household items was £316.
In 2024 that avg monthly spend was £310
In 2025 it was £307
That was how much prices fell back to their pre 2022 levels... in short they fucking never did. You might get 10p of something here and there, and then it's snuck back on a few weeks later.
It's worth mentioning that from 2023 to 2025... we cut back too. Stopped buying something entirely, switched to cheaper alternatives on others. But still the avg monthly spend rose by £90... That's £1080 extra a year on food, whilst buying less of the nicer stuff we used to.
This year... we've changed things up again, cut back once more and switched to doing some batch cooking of meals and switched to buying frozen and cheaper items instead of fresh.
But even trying that, the avg spend each month is still £290.
Now energy prices are going to rise 13% from July... Putting more pressure of households and most likely a further increase in the price of many foods.
Every time we make changes to save money... some wanker billionaire decides to make everyone else suffer a little more.
