#CriticalMass family: Yesterday, on the last #Friday of May, 2026 #cyclists in #Oslo, #Norway (a city which has been heavily investing into #bikeinfrastructure for some years) gathered for their first @CriticalMass. From now on this leisurely #bikeride is going to start at #Youngstorget every last Friday of a month, at 6pm: https://www.criticalmassoslo.no/

A diagonal diverter lets bikes through and stops cars. That's not a compromise. That's the goal.

It cuts a four-way intersection diagonally. Cars can't make through movements. Bikes and pedestrians pass through the gap. Cut-through traffic disappears. Cycling gets a direct route. The street gets quieter. Local access remains. This is what residential street prioritization looks like.

A standard roundabout is not inherently safe for cyclists. Vehicles crossing the bike lane multiple times at uncomfortable angles is not a safe design.

A bike roundabout, modeled on Dutch intersection design, gives cyclists their own separate circular path. Vehicles yield to cyclists at every crossing.

The geometry is simple. The safety result is dramatic.

And it almost never gets built in the United States.
