1/2
We haven’t been doing much night riding lately. After biking in to town to pick up a Father's Day card for two special dads, we have a fresh memory of one of our favorite things about night riding: There are usually far fewer cars on the roads!
Another favorite thing: Being prepared to easily take theft-prone items in with us when we went inside the card store, thanks to having an Ortlieb Vario Lite hybrid backpack-bicycle bag. Having that terrific bag is only because of the kind generosity of Jeff Scully, Ortlieb USA LLC, who donated it in 2025 as part of a thoughtful care package of Ortlieb products, in support of our direct outreach by bike. https://bikemonterey.org/about/financial-donations/acknowledgements-dress-up-challenge-prize-donors
Another favorite thing: The card store employee who welcomed us to bring our bike indoors. That’s especially appreciated because there’s no bike rack or well-lit, line-of-sight place to lock up.

oof what a cunt of a #bikecommute
- 2 car drivers on an empty dual lane each way road decide to try and share their paint job with my arm, within 1km of each other. I'm doing about 30kph they're doing 70+. They go back to the far lane after they've passed.. 🤬
- a bike commuter decides to push me off the track rather than brake to go behind a walker on their side
ugh. time to settle into some kayak rhythm and burn it off (maybe).
Timed it like a boss this morning and made it to the office just before the rain started. Another dry commute for the statistics
Any #Biketooter out there who can tell me what the problem is that makes a Dutch bike with internal hub gears start to sound and feel like a derailleur bike that is stuck between gears, and what to do about it (besides book it in at the LBS)?
This toot was brought to you by a #BikeCommute that I aborted about 3 miles in.

Cycled to work for first time in god knows how long - a year? Two? It was a summer but not this summer, anyway.
This hill is big and knackering, but the view is good at least.
Still I made it, on my hack bike for reasons best left to themselves. Now I just need the building to actually open so I can wash and log on!
Driver competence lead to a real commute that was actually nicer than my usual pedestrian fake commute as well :-)
